Frequent visitors to Chacala, Sandie & Rudy, have invited this ska and reggae group from Sayulita who will be hopefully getting us dancing and will also be jamming with Sandie, Rudy and some other friends, making this a musical jamboree!
There will be desserts & drinks for sale and all proceeds will go to the School & Cambiando Vidas' music program.

Live Music - Los Frixoleros - This Thursday

Chac Mool is very excited to present... Los Frixoleros AKA Dani and Camila from Puerto Vallarta, who will be playing for us on Thursday 2 February from 6pm.

Dani and Camila are both Mexican born, but fluent in the language and culture of North of the border. The pair play traditional Mexican folk music with a twist of irony and a big dash of fun, explaining as they go the origins of some of these classic songs.

In their honor, Arturo will be preparing a Mexican inspired set menu.

For all those planning to attend our 'mole' night this Thursday, let me introduce you to Zuleima and Juanito, husband and wife musicians (seen above in their Jarocho or Veracruz style dress with traditional guitars). They live in Lima de Abajo, near to Playa Naranjo between Chacala and La Peñita. Juanito met Zuleima in this area when he was traveling with some fellow musicians.

We first met the couple when we saw them play with the legendary Cuban Willie's Salsa Band, Juanito on guitar and Zuleima giving a graceful and stylish touch to the latin bongos.

Willie's Band have since played at several private events, catered by Chac Mool, including weddings.

The mulit-talented pair also help support themselves by selling pineapples, coconuts and other fruity snacks on Chacala beach during the Mexican vacation season. They also helped out a great deal in getting our beach ready for certification. They are a great example of beach vendors who care about the beach they use, and of course make sure their customers put all their trash in the bins provided. The above photo is from Semana Santa.

They will make the perfect accompaniment to our delicious homemade mole as they showcase their passion for Veracruz style music. So book your table today!

This is the summary of an article on the Nayarit News website Periodico Express translated into English.

"Chacala beach was certified as Clean Beach (Playa Limpia) during the Seventh National Clean Beaches Meeting held Thursday in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, along with other beaches in states like Jalisco, Sinaloa and Quintana Roo.

"The mayor, Hector Lopez Santiago, along with the director of Urban Development and Ecology, Pablo González Ibarria were present at this important event attended by state and federal authorities, during which 7 beaches were certified, including Chacala in Compostela and Bucerias, Bay of Banderas.

"With great enthusiasm, the mayor of Compostela received the certificate from the Mexican Institute for Standardization and Certification, which declared Chacala beach clean, safe and pollution-free, suitable for recreational use of national and foreign tourism .

"Santiago Lopez acknowledged that the certification of Chacala was a product of joint work with the municipality, with hoteliers, restaurateurs, with the users of the beach, a process of increasing awareness.

"Lopez also recognized the involvement and actions of state government, particularly the Governor Ney Gonzalez Sanchez, who has worked with and strongly supported the municipality of Compostela to achieve certification.

This news reaffirms Nayarit as a national leader in clean beaches, a major achievement of the current governor's administration."

.....We hope that this will not only attract tourism to the area but also help spread a vibe of cleanliness and consciousness. We are also eligible for extra help from the government, potentially getting a paid lifeguard and help for keeping the beach in its pristine condition.

As you can imagine, it has been a lot of work to get the beach to be at its best in order to achieve this prestigious classification. A process that has been started and will hopefully carry on is sifting the sand using screen material. This helps to get rid of bottle caps, cigarette butts and other bits of trash not picked up by raking.

Now at our beachfront location, the Chac Mool team joined forces with some of the most dedicated residents of Chacala to reach higher levels of clean. One of the first tests performed was on the water of our bay - we passed with flying colours and this was the first step on the way to certification.

Restaurant Review - La Leche Puerto Vallarta

The summertime gives us an opportunity to regress and become tourists again in our own home. We can use the time to have new experiences and become even better guides for future guests and visitors in Chacala.

There's no hiding the fact we are foodies and, naturally, we want to check out the competition whenever possible! Today, I want to tell you about La Leche Restaurant in PV.

While PV is about an hour and a half drive from Chacala, anyone who spends a good deal of time here, will in end in Puerto Vallarta eventually. Whether it is to go and swim with dolphins or even just to do a Costco run, this vacation spot is our most convenient nearby metropolis.

For us, a trip to La Leche is worth the journey. We were originally a bit put off but its almost heavy-handed theme of 'Milk' (gross!), with great big milk vats as decoration outside, modernist decor throughout and being adorned by white furniture, white tablecloths, white shelving and white uniformed waiters, the place had something of a Clockwork Orange feel to it, not exactly your cosy eatery. Plus the overly good-looking hostess on the door receives you with a clipboard and makes you feel like you're entering a Guadalajara nightclub, not a gourmet restaurant.

Despite appearances, La Leche is ALL ABOUT THE FOOD. The menu is different EVERYDAY! Father and son chefs Nacho and Poncho (Alfonso) Cadena literally go to the markets in the morning and devise a menu that most plays up to the best the season has to offer. With strong roots in disciplined French cuisine, Poncho has added a certain degree of rock n roll and New-Worldness to classic gourmet food.

The attention to detail to the food in its flavour and form is unrivaled. Prepare to experience new sensations and tastes; they are truly original and not just for sounding good on the menu. On the ever changing menu, you can find tuna sashimi, beef carpaccio as you've never seen them before and for mains, items like sole, duck, and even quail all served with a twist. Occasionally, you'll even find escargot on the menu. Arturo says he had the best mussels of his life at La Leche!

We visited La Leche for the second time after a meeting with the nascent Puerto Vallarta French Alliance. We were honoured to be in the presence of Nacho Cadena, who had just been named president of the Alliance's cultural commission. Now in his 70s, he still heads the kitchen 2 nights a week, as well as having his own radio program on the University of Guadalajara's station called 'The Hour of Pleasure'. His son Poncho takes over the reins in the kitchen and clearly has his say over the ambiance too. Nacho smiled on proudly as Poncho proceeded to take the mic and electric guitar and give the diners a taste of his passion for rock music. A multi-talented family!

Chacala gets on the Map - TV crew comes to our beach

Arturo and I were fortunate enough to host the TV crew from Mexico City's 'Canal 11' (Channel 11) on their Chacala leg of their tour of the Riviera Nayarit. They are filming the second series of the travel program De Paseo

The show is all about exploring small and sometimes hidden towns in Mexico, looking at what there is to do, to smell, to hear and, most importantly, to taste! What makes every place unique and worth visiting. So, apart from the beach which speaks for itself, we explained about the day trips you can do, the snorkeling, the surfing, the fishing, the ancient petroglyphs and the gastronomic experience of eating the freshest seafood and Mexican specialties.

Cooking Classes in PV- Look out for new menu items at Chac Mool!

Recently, Arturo (my husband and co-owner of Chac Mool, if you didn't already know!) has started going to chef school in Puerto Vallarta at the Instituto Gastronomico Franco-Mexicano. Here he is above with Chef Noemi, mastering the art of caramelizing sugar.

Last week, I joined him because it was time to learn some of my favorite cooking - desserts! The head of the school is French so on the list for making were, among others, crème brulée and profiteroles (or cream puffs as my American neighbor tells they are called over there!)

We made everything from scratch including the custard base of the crème brulée, praline flavoured patisserie cream for the filling of the profiteroles. We made cajeta AKA dulce de leche which is a kind of Spanish caramel to fill cookies. And the best bit, we got to eat them all! Next week, they're doing cakes.

Did you know that the dangerous bacteria in raw eggs is killed at 60 degrees centigrade? This is a really good tip for making egg based desserts like custards, mousses and even gelato. Yum yum!

Escapee from Mar de Jade Zen Retreat - another morning @ Chac Mool Cafe

Over my huevos rancheros and English breakfast tea this morning, I had a yet another great chat with two of our most vehemently loyal customers, G & H, who are both incidentally pillars of the expat community, or even the Chacala community in general. The only thing unusual about this event was that we were accompanied by a 'renegade' from the Silence Retreat going on at the Mar de Jade Wellness Center.

She was a delightful woman, native of Ixtapa near to Puerto Vallarta, who spoke perfect English and who still lives and works in Puerto Vallarta. She told us all about the retreat she was attending. The spa hotel had brought in monastic teachers from Taiwan to teach the practice of Silent Illumination. Amazing events that we are not aware of are happening in Chacala!

While our visitor this morning was enjoying the meditation and the calming influence of Mar de Jade's unique location on the south end of Chacala beach, there was one thing missing for her... Her morning coffee! The natural stimulant was off the menu for the budding Zen students and our visitor just had to break free to get a nice hot americano... and ended up making instant friends too.

We swapped emails and telephone numbers, info on Chacala, restaurant tips for Puerto Vallarta and even recollections of Hurricane Kenna that transformed both Chacala and PV in October 2002.

Is it safe in Chacala, Nayarit?

There have been some encouraging reports in different publications about the safety specifically of the Puerto Vallarta area during the crackdown on drug trafficking that Mexico is going through. In fact, the report simply confirms the thoughts that those of us who live in the area already have.

For example, the Universal Vacation Club has issued the following report after the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board appointed Thomas Dale & Associates (TDA), a leading global investigative and security firm, to complete a Security/Threat assessment. Based on extensive interviews and assessments, TDA developed a comprehensive report in relation to all aspects of tourist security in the destination. The report just released concludes that Puerto Vallarta is one of the safest tourist destinations for international and national tourists.

Who did they interview?

Domestic and International Tourists, American and Canadian Consuls, Retired Ex-pats, Timeshare Members, Part-time Residents, Seasonal Boaters, Business Owners, Hospital Administrators, Gay Community Business Representatives, Health Insurance Professionals, Cabbies, Conventioneers, Honeymooners

Interviews were followed up by requests to local law enforcement sources for crime data and department deployment.
What did the study find?

The number of negative events involving foreigners or non-foreigners is fractional compared to the large ex-pat resident population and the millions of visitors that come to vacation each year in Puerto Vallarta.
•
Overall the study found that visitors to the destination feel safe and continue to visit Puerto Vallarta numerous times through their lifetime.
•
The destination’s support services are well above the average standards and dedicated to serving the visiting public.
•
In relations to the drug wars, TDA found that the limited land transit through Puerto Vallarta makes the smuggling of guns and drugs very difficult and thus a non-issue in the destination.

... So, if Puerto Vallarta is safe, what about Chacala? Well, let me give you some day-to-day examples of life in Chacala. Local children of all ages roam around (barefoot) with their parents in the knowledge that their neighbors have got an eye on them. Many of the restaurants here leave all their furniture outside over night and it is always there in the morning. Even some Vacation Rentals don't even give you the key to the room, because you may even not use it.

We are all proud to say that thanks to the efforts of Rotary International and from support from the State Government, we now have a live-in medical doctor right here in the village. What used to be a fraught trip into Las Varas, after a minor incident like a scorpion bite or other domestic accident, is now simply a matter of wondering to our clinic and talking to the English speaking doctor.

Being a Londoner myself by birth and upbringing, I am of the thinking that you can never be too careful and that common sense and worldly wisdom are the keys to a safe vacation wherever you go!

Chicos Surf - The Surf Boys of La Caleta

It is summertime again in Chacala. It is humid. It is rainy. We feel the lash of the tails of hurricanes off in the distance. However, there is one group in town that are happier than ever. That's the surfers. A couple of bays north of here, is La Caleta bay. Because of its location, it is billed as Nayarit's secret wave but to surfers in-the-know, it is known worldwide. It is no place for beginners - for one you have to hire a boat to get there (or brace a serious hike board in hand) and for another the rocky beach is no comfortable pit stop for a novice caught up in a wave. Watch out for the sea urchins! You need to be up on the swell reports too, because there are days when it is seriously flat.

Bernardo (14) knows that surfing is good for fun... and maybe meeting surf girls!

More than a local attraction and something on a 'things to do when in Chacala' list, La Caleta is the great escape for many of our young Chacalans. Whatever problems they have at school or at home, out on the waves they can bond with their buddies, stay healthy and while away the hours.

With kids like Zacbé at 8 years old getting in the big waves and hanging out with other passionate surfers, you never know, we might have a champion in training in our midst! The picture says it all: they've got the board, now they need the outfits, the sun-bleached hair, the lingo... (marejada - swell, olas altas - high waves, marea baja - low tide - they know it in English and Spanish!)

Skimboarding can be practiced right on Chacala Bay

Meanwhile, without knowing it they are becoming the guardians of the beach. Such strong swimmers they are tomorrow's natural lifeguards. They spot turtles and help promote the new clean beach program in town. The sons of fishermen, traveling jewelry sellers, local restaurant owners, they mingle with gringo tourists, out as equals on the waves, from places like Sayulita to Hawaii, from California to Japan, picking up and passing on surf tips. A true cultural exchange.

Thank you to all those that attended our Women's Day event, it was a great success! Everyone got involved in sharing their ideas, thoughts, words of advise and laughter. We learnt a variety of new and interesting things, from the ancient meaning of Mary, to the effects of the disposable sanitary towels on our Mother Earth. An event enjoyed thoroughly!

A special thanks to the lovely ladies that brought homemade delicious pink champagne cupcakes along to the event.

I went down to the fishing docks of Chacala for our regular pick-up of fresh fillets. The fishermen had caught 'curvina' - perfect for ceviche and for burritos.

I remarked particularly on the way the fisherman had solved the problem of where to throw away the fish heads etc...

At sunset, the ceremony was breathtaking and the bride wore her hair loose and wore flip flops under her beautiful, white strapless gown. A testament to the laid back spirit of this formal occasion.

The on-hand wedding coordinator had organised a mariachi band, also dressed in white, a salsa band for post-dinner dancing, and, most importantly for mums and dads, a children's entertainer.

Day Trips in Chacala - No 3 - Compostela

Compostela is the head town of the municipality (or 'county') to which Chacala belongs.

In these photos, you can see the altars that local children made for the Day of the Dead festivities

It has beautiful colonial features; its town plaza boasts a fantastic, small archaeology museum - totally free!

I love it there because it feels like a real living town. Its at a higher altitude than the beach (of course!) and it used to be famous for cigar making.

Day Trips in Chacala - No 2 - El Kora Waterfall

For the traveller who doesn't mind a bit of a hike, El Kora waterfall (or El salto del Kora) is the best all year round waterfall in the Riviera Nayarit. About an hour's drive from Chacala, towards San Blas, the fresh water of El Kora falls at least 10m (30 feet) into a cool pool of water. Perfect for cooling off from the Mexican sun. Good shoes are required for the hike back up to the road. Well worth it though!

PS. For those visiting in the summer months, you will have a myriad of waterfalls to choose from and their cool waters are appreciated even more at that time of year!

Day Trips in Chacala - No. 1 - La Caleta

One of the best day trips you can do in Chacala is to La Caleta beach.

It's totally undeveloped and you can find it by trekking out towards the highway from Chacala and taking a left at Rancho Maralta. You can hike or in any high vehicle you can follow the cross country path. There are some friendly dogs there and there is a palapa to give some shade. Remember your bottle of water.

The beach has pebbles but the water is nice and clear. It's famous for its surfable waves and the best time to go is early morning. Again the pebbles mean the wave is pretty much for experienced surfers only. There are good boatmen who can take you there for the early morning waves. For example the guys at Chacala Escape - ask for Trini.

On 30 September, exactly 45 days after the mother turtle laid her eggs near the cafe, the baby turtles began to hatch on their own in the ice box we stored them in. The following day, we dug down to the ones at the bottom and helped the rest out of their shells and from under the moist sand.

With the help of our waitresses, Yuli and Selene, we gathered together many of the local kids plus some Chac Mool regulars for the release just after the sunset. Luckily for the turtles, we waited for the predatory gaviotas (gulls) to go to bed. Unluckily for us, the mosquitos were out in force!

None of the kids seemed to notice though, as they clamoured around the box of wriggling turtlets. With the promise of being able to each release one, the 15 or so of them, ranging from kinder age to 14, got into an orderly row and awaited their new-born buddies.

Out of the 79 turtles that hatched from the nest of 106, virtually all got to the sea in good time and without help. Their instincts directed them instantly towards their new home and source of nutrients, the Pacific Ocean.

We can only hope that one of them will one day return to their native beach to lay its eggs. Unfortunately, only 1 out of every 1,000 turtles successfully released to the sea will survive to lay eggs.

Special thanks go to Vicente & Marco, of the Turtle Camps at, respectively, Playa Naranjo and Playa Tortugas, for their advice and support. They both do very important work to keep the species alive and are always looking for volunteers (hint hint!!)

Joys of Summer in Chacala: Turtles!

The night before last, one of our waitresses, Yuli, spotted a turtle on the beach, about 40m down the path from the cafe. The immense, pre-historic creature was already covering over with sand her brand new nest of eggs.

This is the only time of year when the local sea turtles come onto dry land in order to lay their eggs. Fortunately, most of them go to Tortugas beach, which is an extremely long and virtually uninhabited sandy beach just north of here. There the eggs are relatively safe from egg-nappers - people who steal the eggs to eat or sell (many under the mistaken belief that they are an aphrodisiac!).

On the advice of our friend, Vicente Pen~a, we put the eggs in an ice box and are now keeping them at home. In 45 days, they will be ready to hatch!!! We were really impressed by the local youth in Chacala who were so keen to help this endangered species, with no thought for selling on the supposed delicacy.

How to make a frappuccino

A frappuccino is the perfect icy treat for these warm days of June in the Riviera Nayarit. It's sweet, it's creamy, freshly prepared but best of all contains the nectar of all Chac Mool coffee: real, organic espresso.

First of all, create your single espresso. Fill your desired glass to the top with ice. Now pour your espresso, a small amount of cream (or milk) and sugar (or sweetener) to taste, into the blender. Add the quantity of ice that filled your glass. Pulse several times and then blend on a high speed till smooth.

No se sabe si la temporada o el spring break esta por terminar, pero lo que si se sabe que las vacaciones mas impresionantes de Mexico estan por llegar.

La Semana Santa ( Easter week ) donde cada una de las playas de Mexico se pone al tope de gente de todas las edades,colores y sabores, pero Chac Mool los invita a todas las personas a que vengan a pasar una semana muy agradable cerca de la playa , una semana que se puede aprovechar para estar en contacto con la naturaleza y por que no de aprovechar a tomar un buen Cafe o una copa de Vino.
Aqui en Chacala despues de tener una de las mas hermosas playas de la Riviera Nayarita encuentras muchas playas mas, que se llegan en los tours de lancha o en unas muy buenas caminatas la mejor es ir a ver el Krater!, despues si sigues caminando llegas a Playa Las Cuevas especial para el snorkel que mucha de la gente mejor lo hace en via lancha, Playa la Caleta perfecta para el Surf, Chacala que es muy buena para nadar y realizar cualquier actividad acuatica, depues de no mas de 20 minutos te encuentras con los hermosos Manglares que al llegar se renta una canoa sin motor, para no molestar tanto a los Cocodrilos, y a su vez ir demasiado lento para ver toda clase de aves, tambien estan los Petogliferos de Alta Vista a unos 20 minutos aprox.

Hmmm ... Curiouser and Curiouser... thought Alice

This TUESDAY 13th January, 5-7pm

Lucy is hosting a fundraiser cocktail party at Xaltemba Gallery and Restaurant.

We have chosen the theme ALICE IN WONDERLAND for 2 reasons - because the story was originally written in and about my college at Oxford University, Christ Church (where the films of Harry Potter were also filmed), about the daughter of the college Dean, Alice Liddell. In fact, as an undergraduate studying English literature there I lived in the Liddell building which was constructed in her memory, and my bedroom overlooked the enormous bendy-branched tree in which the Cheshire cat was supposed to sit and about which Carroll wrote his nonsense poem “The Jabberwocky”.

The second reason for this choice of theme is that, often here in Mexico, I feel a bit like Alice who enters “Wonderland” (“La Penita de Xaltembaland”??!!) on her voyage of surreal self-discovery and development... As Wonderland, in its bizarre familiarity continues to teach Alice all the things she needs to find out about herself, La Penita, Mexico does the same for me... only with a few more pelicans and margaritas, and slightly fewer cheshire cats and mad queens... although, sometimes i wonder...

The money raised at the event will go towards the continuation of my Oxford education (I have recently been lucky enough to be accepted for more postgraduate work, which i am continuing with here when not working in Xaltemba) and will help to facilitate more works and stories about La Penita and the Nayarit coast (some of which are already out and about in England and which my tutors and the oxford publishers have been showing a lot of interest in as I send them over!)

The party is also a temporary farewell and may be the last chance I get to see you all for a little while, because I have been called back to Oxford (leaving in less than a week) for further assessment, mid terms etc and tuition (yikes!)

During the evening there will be a dance performance from one of my former companeras in the dance troupe, who has a contortion act and belly dance (in the style of the hookah smoking caterpillar perhaps), as well as other lithe-bodied treats in store for us.

There will also be a silent auction sale of semi-nude watercolors of me which were painted by the acclaimed artist (and my boss and friend) Roberto Gil de Montes...

And I may do a little reading, if anyone can bare to listen...

Themed outfits encouraged but not compulsory! See you there!!

Candlelit Gourmet Pizza: A newcomer to the Chac Mool range

Due to popular demand, Chac Mool is now during this busy time serving pizza, pasta and salad, along with our extensive wine list. We open at night on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6pm.

Arturo's been making the dough himself and we've been combining the thin crust pizza dough with our authentic deli-style cold cuts and other fresh ingredients. The Serrano ham, mozzarella and basil combination has been quite the sell out!

We have a pasta, a salad and a dessert of the day too, to keep the variation going.

The baking is still going strong and our croissants and cinnamon rolls in particular are being lapped up by locals! The real seal of approval was from some French customers who kept coming back for them and they should know! (Salut Caroline et Nonoch!!)

Three little helpers: Bob, the puppy, Amy, the kitten, and Arturito the little waiter! El meserito, who was helping his uncle Arturo wait tables!

Check that out! We finally got our proper all singing all dancing La Pavoni coffee machine and it's doing wonders for our cappuccinos. Arturo's handiwork made a wave shape out of the foam. All that and Organic too!

Baking Master Class at the Cafe

Today we had the pleasure of having somewhat of a baking master class in the Chac Mool kitchen. Don Alejandro, who lives here in Chacala, spent the day with us in the kitchen making two kinds of dough from which we made marmalade tarts and empanadas, croissants and cinnamon rolls.

Alejandro began learning to be a baker in 1940 (!) and in his long career he ended up working in his native Mexico City, Tepic and even Barcelona, no doubt among other places. From his first years as an apprentice to eventually owning several of his own bakeries, he learnt a thing or two about bread, good bread. He is more or less officially retired now but is keen to start baking again to keep himself active and busy.

First Arturo and Alejandro made the dough for the croissants and the rolls in the early morning since it needed time to ferment. Meanwhile they made dough for the tarts and for the empanadas that were made with the left over dough.

As you can see they came out beautifully and thanks to Arturo’s homemade organic Seville orange marmalade they were a perfect bittersweet combination.

The kneading of the pastry dough was quite the learning experience and Alejandro told us that the croissants or cuernitos in Mexico often do not come out light and fluffy like European ones because the Mexican bakers take shortcuts in the kneading.

His technique for rolling up the croissants was quite something and Arturo had a good go at imitating too – just check them out!

The cinnamon raisin rolls were something of an afterthought and yet became one of the most popular of the day’s production.

We had a tasting of all the delicious breads with Alejandro himself, Concha, Gordon and Jorge Chavez, who in fact supplied us with the Seville oranges for the marmalade from his parents’ ranch near San Pancho.

Chac Mool: Hub of Local Activity

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting a meeting of the United Women of Chacala group. Some of its members humbly refer to it as the Restless Women of Chacala and I was led to believe that they normally just got together to talk about their daily lives, and I had in mind something of a knitting circle.

Boy, did I get that wrong. In attendance were women from different walks of life with one thing in common: a passion for positive action in their town. It proved difficult to even take the order since the meeting got in full swing very quickly. Carmen began giving out information on the photography of Manuel Ramos, who is the featured artist in the Town-Gallery exhibition that can be seen in various spots around town, including at Chac Mool Café and outside the church. The group was good spirited and every one of the dozen or so members participated to a good degree.

Their meeting reminded me that Chacala is not a town quite like any other. There are more societies, associations, charity projects and community programs than there are streets!

To mention but two more important worthy activities going on at the moment, and which have been discussed and promoted at length at Chac Mool, there are the Lifeguard Program and the newsletter, Chacala Informa. If you weren’t already aware about the Lifeguard Program – get informed! There are lifeguards saving lives of visitors to Chacala Beach right now being paid

solely by donations from kind residents, businesses and tourists. Se fue Octubre y viene Noviembre....

Es el fin del mes y al parecer, o mas bien , dicen los rumores que los turistas están por llegar y creo que Chac Mool esta por dar un cambio, un cambio de horario, menú, y servicio.

También ya las mañanas se sienten mas frescas y los atardeceres caen justo en frente de Chac Mool, también tenemos noticias nuevas han llegado dos bebes al cafe, es Bob y Amy. Bob es un San Bernardo de 2 meses de edad y Amy es una gatita de la misma edad, ya les pondremos unas fotos y les contaremos mas acerca de ellos.

La otra noticia es que el café a granel ya esta a la venta en sus 3 tipos de tueste Medio , Oscuro y la Mezcla de la Casa, y esta ya distribuyéndose por toda la riviera nayarita, ya esta en cruceros, en galerías, cafés, y tiendas de abarrotes, si gustas de una bolsa llámanos al 327 219 40 97, las bolsas son de 1/2 kilo y el costo es de $80 pesos, ya pondré una foto de la bolsa con toda y publicidad.

Otra noticia es que la revista Chacala Informa ya esta por salir al publico y se va poder adquirir en los restaurantes de Chacala y puntos estratégicos.

Bueno por ahora seguiré trabajando, ya descanse y después de un delicioso desayuno hay que ir a entregar café……..

Coffee: just refreshment or something else?

One of the reactions we had from locals on opening the café was: ‘Finally some culture in Chacala!’ I said, ‘Steady on!’ After all, we’re serving coffee not giving lectures – if you want my thoughts on Being & Nothingness you’ll have to find me after 5pm. But as the days go by, I can see that what was true when the first coffeehouse in England was opened in Oxford in 1651 is true today in Chacala. A café can be a great place to meet, to express ideas among friends and for people of differing opinions can exchange thoughts.

The phrase ‘coffee culture’ gets bandied about a lot these days and never is it far from the dreaded ‘S’ word (yup, ‘Starb*&ks’). But what is it about coffee or cafés that seems to encourage what some could term ‘culture’?

Perhaps because the pace is slower in a café than in a restaurant and there’s more room for talking between sips of cappuccino, or of chai tea, than between bites of hamburger? Perhaps you could argue that you feel more lucid after an espresso than after a beer or a tequila and hence more intellectual activity or fewer brawls!

Whatever it is, I think we’ve already seen the seeds of the cultural side to coffee here in Chac Mool. Locals have been able to talk, at length, about what they feel should happen or what they think might be happening with the serious tourist developments going on on their doorstep. People have agreed, disagreed and agreed to disagree. As a fruit of such discussions, it has also been decided to start a newsletter for the town. The mini-magazine will spread news of events, past and future, with a view to developing cultural projects and helping to unite the town. WATCH THIS SPACE!

Today, History was the subject of a lengthy discussion. An active Christian and a local painter/decorator were spurred on to talk about how Mexican History is a controversial and tricky subject. We began talking about Chac Mool itself. I said that many believe it is the name of the Mayan Rain God. In fact, the truth is that it is an invented name, meaning ‘Thundering Paw’ in Maya, given to the statue of the man who holds a sacrificial plate on his lap – see logo! There was talk of lost cities and of how the Mexican government (or any government for that matter) itself can affect the work of historians and thus our whole vision of the world and the world of yesterday.

Food for thought. I hope we do continue to be a channel for cultural events and discussions and while by no means have we brought culture to Chacala, we do hope to see it flourish in these times of change. Who will come for coffee tomorrow? What will we find out? It all remains to be seen.

New additions

In an effort to turn our pueblo (town) into a galeria, we've been kindly leant 2 photographs from Carmen's display from the other day's cultural fair.

We've hung up the large banner style pictures here on two different sides of the cafe. They both depict market scenes from Mexico City in the early twentieth century.

To my mind, what is so interesting is how familiar the scenes are. The style of the people's clothes are more traditional and the stalls are slightly more basic but I imagine they could be photos of the tianguis at La Penita on a Thursday!

Our next most exciting new addition is a new member of the Chac Mool team - Pepino! No, not literally cucumber, because that was already on the menu. It's Arturo's brother, Miguel (known as Pepino) who has come to start helping us full time running the cafe. He's been a great help so far and we hope he'll continue to enjoy working here and getting used to the pace of life around here. Here's a photo of him in action.

Week 4: Culture in Chacala

By tomorrow, we will have officially been in business for a month... and no sign of turning back. No sign of the gringo invasion just yet either so we've been getting to know more locals and exploring the ins and outs of our new home, Chacala.

It has been a week of culture here in the town, started off last Saturday, by a poetry reading kindly organised by Carmen at Majahua, a lovely hotel-restaurant-spa overlooking the South side of Chacala beach, (www.majahua.com). A poet from Mexico City read from a book of his own poetry, Lluvias y Secas (Rain and Drought), including a poem about an experience he had right here on Chacala beach. There was a special dedication as well to all those defending public access to the beaches of the region: it was a poem about the warrior spirit. Many attendees stayed up quite late, having been spurred on to political debate! Watch out those who mess with us!

The restaurant at Majahua made a dramatic setting: at sundown with raucous waves crashing in the background. The poet may have had to speak up over their roar, but as he said himself 'la voz del mar, que es la poesia misma' ('the voice of the sea, which is poetry itself'), certainly did not detract from the evening's enjoyment. I like to think the non-Spanish speakers got something out of it too, after all the sonority of poetry is meant to elude linguistic boundaries.

The reading was a prelude to following day's cultural fair in the churchyard. There wasthe dominating presence of the inimitable group Women United for the Bay of Banderas, (Mujeres Unidas de Bahia de Banderas), who are very active advocates of public access to local beaches; they gave an informative talk about human rights. It was also an opportunity for people that had not had the chance to sample our coffee to try our famous Organic americano at the Chac Mool display table at the fair. People came back for more!

Week 3 - We've only just begun

It seems the wine-tasting has projected us into a surprisingly busy third week. We've continued to meet Chacala locals, Mexican and foreign, and we've had several tourist customers that have also been very encouraging. We've even had people come from Guayabitos to check out this new cafe they've heard about! Word of mouth seems to be spreading....

Today I must get around to updating the menu. They may be just about enough demand now to put some new exciting combinations on there. We'll keep you posted.

This Thursday, I went to the market at La Penita to get lots of fruit and vegetables and to do some PR! I also got a great pescado sarandeado out of the day. I must go, I've got beans to squash.

Wine Tasting at Chac-Mool

Hi everyone

Yesterday night we had a wine tasting and it went wonderfully, we talked and we got to know new people in town. People brought some canapés and I made a pizza bread that everyone liked. We had 10 different bottles to try plus Mike and Karla got two more bottles to keep the party going.

Everyone made some notes about the wine and we'll tell you which ones will be the best of the 10 bottles. It was a great opportunity to test the wines and find out not only our personal opinions but also those of the masses! When we get all the feedback we'll make a proper selection and the final wine list will no doubt be circulated when it's ready. Remember that all bottles get a discount when you take them away ;-)

Emilia and I we just want to say thanks to you all for coming and spending a very nice evening and bringing the nice atmosphere to Cafe Chac-Mool. Special thanks to Gordon for helping us to organise.

Ya las lluvias se han ido y empieza el viento, que se siente aqui en el cafe ya creemos que pronto cambiaremos nuestro menu por desayunos y cenas, otra de las noticias es que el internet esta abierto para que puedan venir a checar los mails mientras toman cafe o cualquier bebida caliente.

La Apertura/ The Opening

La apertura del Cafe Chac-Mool.

Los invitamos a ver los seguimientos de nuestro cafe Chac-Mool que recientemente lo hemos puesto en servicio mi esposa Emilila y yo Arturo en la hermosa playa de Chacala, que se encuentra en el estado de Nayarit justo despues de las Varas un pueblo muy cercano, y si vienen de regreso de Puerto Vallarta no dejen de estar muy atentos por que despues de la Peñita van a ver un crucero que al lado derecho esta la venta de frutas y dulces, justo en este crucero tienen que dar vuelta a la izquierda y se encontraran con el camino hacia esta playa.

Ya vendremos con una muy interesantes historias hacerca del pueblo, los chismes, las noticias y todo lo que pase en esta cultura del cafe que se presta para mucho..... ya se formaran aquellos personajes que en cada cafe acontecen y tendremos mucho que contarles.

Despues de una gran busqueda por Guadalajara tratando de encontrar los mejores precios, proveedores, de andar de bar en bar de restaurant en restaurant ,de cafe en cafe, de tienda en tienda con la ayuda de los primos , de los amigos, tomando sugerencias, finalizamos con este proyecto que con mucho entuciasmo se ha logrado incluso con la averia que se tuvo al venir esa noche que el trailer se dirigia a Chacala se vino una gran tormenta y que el coche en el que veniamos se aberio de los limpiabrisas y no podiamos parar por que el trailer se dirijia a el lugar y si no llegabamos,quien recibiria todo el equipo. Bueno lo recibimos hacerca de las 3 am se descargo y despues de 2 o 3 semanas, dado a que la compañia donde se adquirio la maquina de cafe, no llego a tiempo y que con todas las escusas posibles y llamada tras llamada al fin llego con la maquina a Chacala, pero que creen!!!!!!!! la maquina no era la que se pacto ,,,,, llegaron con la maquina equivocada y pues ahora seguimos esperando a que nos llegue la maquina que ordenamos desde el principio.....Finalmente el cafe/restaurant se puso en marcha, tuvimos gente ese dia y hasta este dia seguimos con el proyecto ya haciendo cambios y pensando en nuevas cosas que posteriormente las informaremos.....
